The AED 47,000 that blocked a trade licence.

A filed VAT return is not a paid one. How an unpaid VAT balance triggered an FTA block flag on a DED licence renewal, and how it was cleared in six working days.

A founder messaged me last week, panicked.

His DED licence renewal was blocked. His PRO had run the file through the system three times. Every attempt rejected. No clear reason on the portal. He was three days from his renewal expiry.

It was not a DED problem.

Here is what I found

His company had filed VAT 201 for Q3-2025. It had not paid the AED 47,000 of net VAT. The internal team assumed they could clear it the next month. Eight months passed. Late-payment interest had accrued. A 1%-per-month time-based penalty had compounded on the original undeclared liability.

When DED ran the renewal, FTA's electronic clearance returned a block flag. No notification had been sent to the company because the address on the FTA portal was outdated.

The DED system simply will not renew a licence with an open FTA flag.

What I corrected

  1. Quantified the unpaid VAT and accrued penalties — AED 47,000 plus AED 11,200 in penalties and interest.
  2. Settled the full balance via the FTA portal the same day.
  3. Requested a Clearance Certificate via the EmaraTax portal, citing the renewal context.
  4. Updated the FTA-portal address so the next notification reaches them.
  5. Coordinated with DED to re-run the licence application after the certificate issued.

Renewal cleared in 6 working days.

The lesson: in the UAE today, your tax compliance is not just a number on a return. It is a gate in front of your licence, your immigration file, and your travel.
